"Lead Free is in the Mix" - Plumbing Engineer (May 14)
Back in September of 2006, California signed into law Assembly Bill 1953, and that law set into motion the foundation and momentum that ultimately lead to the amending of The Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act. The new requirements for “lead free” went into effect on January 4th of this year, but there still exist some confusion on its applicability to mixing valves and other products in the commercial plumbing industry. With the assistance of superior staff at Plumbing Engineer, Leonard offers this insight on the ASSE standards and the direction on mixing valves and the lead free requirements.

Leonard releases our ECO-MIX™ line of Lead Free Mixing Valves
in support of the Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act!
Getting ready for the lead-free drinking water requirements that go into effect in 2014 can be a daunting task. Leonard Valve makes it easy to take control with lead-free (LF) point-of-use valves and corresponding master mixers. Leonard Valve ECO-MIX™ products meet lead-free requirements, which are defined as having a lead content “not more than a weighted average of 0.25 percent when used with respect to the wetted surfaces of pipes and pipe fittings, plumbing fittings, and fixtures in systems delivering water for human consumption.” Plus, ECO-MIX units are 3rd party approved as lead free. That means Leonard valves can handle your most demanding environments with the added reassurance of meeting lead free provisions.

Leonard Point-of-Use Valves now achieve 0.25 GPM Minimum Flow!!!
As state and national directives, such as CAL Green and LEED, continue to drive buildings to use less and less water, Leonard has stepped up to the challenge to support the needs of the industy. 0.375 GPM low flow aerators are now being used on faucets, and this presents a challenge to supply tempered water, as up until this point, most ASSE 1070 point-of-use valves had a minimum flow of 0.5 GPM. Well, the game changes now!!! Leonard's Model 170-LF (3/8" connections) and 270-LF (1/2") are now approved to ASSE 1070 with a minimum flow of 0.25 GPM! This is the lowest minimum flow of any 1070 POU in the market today! In addition, both valves are 3rd Party Certified as Lead Free. Please contact your local Leonard represenative for product information and pricing.

Leonard Valve - 100 Years and Counting
Leonard Valve is celebrating its 100 year anniversary in 2013 as the leader in commercial, institutional and industrial marketplaces for all mixing valve technologies - continuing its market leadership role, forged from its founder, Frederick C. Leonard. It all started when Mr. Leonard became concerned about the delivery of safe, tempered water. Little did he know that he would spawn an entire industry. He began producing his patented thermostatic water mixing valves near Providence, R.I. - where the company still manufactures today and Leonard's original design has stood the test of time. Within the first year, Leonard valves were installed and operating throughout the New England area in hospital buildings and anywhere tempered water was required. The company foundation stood on sound engineering principles and unsurpassed service. Since 1913, Leonard Valve Company has been the quality leader in the manufacture of thermostatic water mixing valves. All Leonard water temperature control products are made of the highest quality materials and manufactured to the most critical engineering specifications. Below are articles writtent in both Plumbing Engineer and PM Engineer to highlight this notable accomplishment.

"Selecting Thermostatic Mixing Valves for Emergency Fixtures"
PM Engineer Magazine (January 2007 - G. Wilcox) Water heater size and storage requirements must be carefully addressed to deliver tepid water ("moderately warm; lukewarm") to eyewash and drench-shower requirements. Designers must be concerned with providing enough hot water to allow delivery of tepid water to emergency eyewash and shower equipment in an installation. Thermostatic Mixing Valves are devices that blend hot and cold water to meet tepid demands.

"Institutional Hydrotherapy and Hot Water - A Delicate Mix"
Plumbing & Mechanical Magazine (October 2006 - G. Wilcox) Hydrotherapy, an ancient healing treatment, is still employed in healthcare facilities today. The process is based upon water's absorptive properties, and the healing effects result from its ability to use the human body's response to warm and cold temperature to assist in the healing process. The application of a Leonard water temperature control device is critical for providing controlled mixed water temperatures for each type of shower, bath or spray used for hydrotherapy in the institutional environment.
